10 Things To Be Grateful For As We Celebrate Thanksgiving in Delaware

by Zachary Foust

Everyone seems to be in a Christmas mood now that Halloween is over. Maybe they were so happy that they forgot about a different holiday a month before Christmas.

In the past few years, everyone seems to have forgotten about Thanksgiving. And look, Christmas is great, but that doesn't mean you should forget Thanksgiving.

Maybe you're reading this while sitting in front of your Christmas tree, listening to holiday music on your computer. Or perhaps you’re wearing six holiday-themed sweaters or shaking your head vehemently because you disagree. But today, we’ll tell you why you shouldn’t miss this important day in America.

In honor of the wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, here are ten things to be grateful for as we celebrate Thanksgiving in Delaware.

1. Family

Maybe your aunt is known to be too loud. Or your younger niece is annoying and acts like a child. Perhaps your grandma is right when she tells you your skirts are "too short."

But when it's Thanksgiving, you put aside all these differences and act like a typical family. It could be because of the Christmas spirit, but it could be because they're full of turkey.

Kidding aside, it’s a beautiful time to set aside all family issues and just be together once a year. Maybe it’s more meaningful now after the pandemic made us so isolated. You’ll be glad to go back to your roots now and then to see how far you’ve come and how your family is doing.

2. The Abundance of Food

Thanksgiving is about overeating and falling asleep on your aunt's kitchen floor.

This is the only meal of the year when eating many traditional holiday foods is okay. Gobble up some turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, squash, rolls, mashed potatoes, and pumpkin pie to your fill. What could be better than that?

3. The Beauty of Autumn

At the beginning of September, when everyone is still wearing bikinis and drinking hot Pumpkin Spice Lattes, everyone is excited that fall is finally here.

By November, the autumn had arrived in all its splendor. The leaves are at their most vibrant, and the air is at its coolest.

Why rush through Christmas’ snowstorms and temperatures below zero when the weather you've been waiting for during Thanksgiving has finally come?

4. The Annual Homecoming

Those who work long hours and don't get to spend time with their families at home often get the day off for Thanksgiving. So, Thanksgiving is when many people who have been away from home for months finally return and spend time with their families.

5. Thoughtful Reflection

If we take Thanksgiving apart, it comprises the words "thanks" and "giving."

Thanksgiving is a great holiday because it's the one day of the year when we should all stop complaining and be thankful for all the good things in our lives.

Use Thanksgiving to try something new and be grateful for your life. Think about the people and things that matter to you, the hobbies and interests that bring you joy, and the ways you've grown and changed since last year.

6. The Customs and Traditions

Thanksgiving is an old tradition if there's one thing you can say about it. Surprisingly, this custom is very different from one family to the next.

Every family has its rituals and traditions around mealtime, from the food they make to the people they eat with to the things they do before and after a meal. On Thanksgiving, we must keep our traditions and start new ones with the people we've just met.

7. The Thanksgiving Parade

For people who grew up in a small town outside of the city, the annual Thanksgiving Day Parade was always something to look forward to. This event is fantastic not only because of the creative floats, groups, and individuals who participate but also because of how much thought and planning goes into it every year.

This event must be stressful for the people in charge, with all the floats, sponsors, participants, and cameras. It takes a lot of work to get into the city and make room for everyone wanting to see the event. Still, you’ll have a bagel and coffee on your hands on the way to the show. Everyone is there to have a great time.

8. The Ultimate Holiday

The Thanksgiving holiday shows what the United States is all about.

One of the best traditions in American history began when the first settlers got along with the tribes who lived in the area. Everyone you meet at school, work, the gym, the coffee shop, the grocery store, or anywhere else will be happy and excited for no apparent religious reason.

The whole country takes the day off to celebrate this one holiday, which is pretty cool, especially in the modern United States.

9. The Best Sleep of the Year

You can almost feel a food coma as you eat the last of the turkey and pumpkin pie. And then, you'll get the best sleep of the year on Thanksgiving night, which is essential for the last reason …

10. The Aftermath (Black Friday Craziness)

If you like Thanksgiving dinner, you'll eat it every day for the next week. You can get more out of your Thanksgiving leftovers this year by making grilled cheese, ramen, and pizza. A feast that never ends, if you will!

And who doesn’t love to line up all day for your discounted goods during the Black Friday deals?

Final Thoughts

We hope reading about all the great things about Thanksgiving helped you remember why you shouldn't miss it. Soon it will be Christmas. But for now, enjoy thinking about how thankful you are to have such great friends and family around you and how excited you are about the delicious meal that is coming. Happy Thanksgiving, Delawareans!
