Hello friends! Ready for some fast facts about Delaware?

It will come right at you so fast you won't even have time to blink.

If you're all set, let's get started.

1. There are more chickens in Delaware than there are people.

Why did the chicken cross Interstate 95? Naturally, so it can reunite with all 1,999,999 of its pals over the other side!

The second-smallest state, Delaware, is home to two million chickens, dispersed over all three of its counties. You may not believe this, but Delaware's chickens' ratio to humans is 200:1.

You may be riding your bike through Delaware, ranked as the third most bike-friendly state, and exclaim, "Look at all those chickens!" as you pass a field.

2. We love blue chickens so much that they became our Official State Bird.

At this time, the "Delaware Blue Hen" has been designated as the official state bird of Delaware. There are a lot of different explanations as to why the "Blue Hen Chicken" is Delaware's official state bird. Here is the one that is likely to be the most well-known among them.

It is widely believed that the courage and savagery shown by Delaware warriors during the Revolutionary War served as the motivation for their choosing.

During that era, cockfighting was a relatively common kind of entertainment. In addition, as time passed, the hens and chickens that participated in the conflict evolved into a metaphor for courage and bravery in facing adversity. Since then, the "Delaware Blue Hen Chicken" has been officially recognized as Delaware's state bird.

3. We even have an Official State Bug that empowers women.

Since April 25, 1974, the "Lady Bug" has been recognized as Delaware's "official" state bug. In some areas of the globe, it is also referred to as the 'Ladybird Beetle,' the 'Lady Fly,' and the 'Lady Beetle.' The pupils in the second grade at Lulu M. Ross Elementary School and their teacher, Mrs. Mollie Brown-Rust, put in a significant amount of work, which resulted in the proclamation being made.

Today, we have the famous Ladybug Music Festival, where we celebrate the beauty and art of bug music–just kidding! The Ladybug Festival was established in 2012 and is the country's LARGEST celebration of women in music. It has a lineup headed entirely by female artists. It provides women platforms and empowers them in all aspects of music event production.

4. We have a town that is only 0.1 square mile across.

Yes, you read that right. At 0.1 square mile–not 1, but 0.1, Hartly is the smallest town in Delaware. This little village is located just outside of Dover. While it only has 76 people, it has a strong feeling of community.

They take great pride in their colonial past since the town itself goes back to the year 1734. The year 1984 was the 250th anniversary of the founding of Hartly, and the city was celebrated in a big way. Local historians even compiled a comprehensive town history just for the event, which can be seen on their website.

5. We are once called “New Sweden.”

To set the record straight, the very first log cabins in North America were constructed in 1638 by Finnish settlers. There are rumors that these log homes were built in a city named "New Sweden," named after that country.

This location is really modern-day Delaware.
