The Best Winter Things To Do This Christmas In New Castle County (Part 2)

by Zachary Foust

You might not think there's much to do in Delaware in the winter, but this guide will show you otherwise.

We've put together a list of your favorite things to do and Christmas events you can enjoy all over Delaware.

From the beginning of November until the beginning of January, you can go anywhere in the state and find a Christmas- or winter-themed event.

In New Castle County, you can take a train ride through some of the most beautiful scenery, see historic homes that have been decorated for the holidays, get a drink at a bar with a Christmas theme, and more. This is the second and final part of a two-part blog post. If you haven't read the first part yet, you can read it here.

So, here are more of the best winter things to do this Christmas in New Castle County!

1. Experience the Yuletide at Winterthur.

Winterthur (5105 Kennett Pike) in Wilmington is always a good place. Still, the Yuletide display is trendy in the winter.

The person in charge of decorating the 175 rooms of Henry Francis du Pont's Winterthur estate for the holidays must have a full-time job with overtime. The decorations are just plain magical and extraordinary.

This top museum of American decorative arts has a tour called the "Yuletide Tour." Each room tells a story about how Americans have celebrated the holidays since the country was founded. There are sparkling trees, charming dollhouses, Dickens visits, and many holiday events that sell out quickly, such as the Yuletide Brunch with Santa.

2. Aboard the Wilmington and Western Railroad Holiday Lights Express.

Take a ride on one of their 100-year-old heated coaches, all decked out in thousands of Christmas lights, for an unforgettable experience! During this hour-long nighttime journey through the Red Clay Valley, many trackside neighbors also decorate their homes and yards for our passengers to admire. It’s truly a sight to behold!

3. Feel the spirit of Christmas at Historic New Castle.

Every other weekend in December, Old New Castle becomes a time machine for a town-wide festival that has become a must-do. The festival includes tours of historic mansions that would fit in with A Christmas Carol.

During the second weekend of December, Dickensian fun fills the cobblestone streets of historic New Castle. The Arsenal hosts "Fezziwig's Ball" the night before A Day in Old New Castle, when famous property owners open their doors to the public for holiday-themed tours. Begin your day at the New Castle Presbyterian Church, which hosts various events throughout the year.

4. Dine in the Candlelight Theater.

Arden's Candlelight Theater at 2208 Millers Road was the state's first dinner theater to open. This was more than 50 years ago. Even now, the establishment still puts on a Christmas show every year.

Each season has different performances, and your ticket price covers the show and your dinner.

5. Grab some drinks at the Blitzen Bar.

The pop-up version of Wilmington's Blitzen Bar is only open from the middle of November until Christmas Eve. It serves drinks with names like "Santa's Cough Syrup" and "Moose Milk," which you should sample at least once.

Final Thoughts

The most beautiful, elaborate, and magical Christmas decorations in the state can be found in New Castle County. If you want a wonderful Christmas and winter, you should try any of these locations, in addition to the ones mentioned above. Then you'll know Delaware is the best place to spend the holidays this year!
